Meet Sadie Mae
Description:
Sadie Mae’s new permanent senior foster mom thought her days of dog companionship were over. After losing her beloved dog in January and seeing the reality of the costs when a dog needs medical care, she assumed she’d have to spend the rest of her life without a dog. Then she realized something amazing: she had so much love to give to a dog who might otherwise be considered “unadoptable.” That’s when Sadie Mae came into her life.
Sadie Mae, a senior dog, was rescued by AHDRO when she was picked up as a stray in rough shape. The vet wasn’t sure she’d make it—she was emaciated and battling severe infections. But Sadie Mae had an indomitable spirit. With love, treatment, and care at the vet hospital, she began to gain ground. All she needed was someone willing to see her potential and give her a chance at a happy life.
Would there be an older person who was willing to take her on? An open heart plus love creates a powerful combination.
Sadie Mae has shown her true self in the short time she’s been in her new home: a calm, sweet nature and a spirit that insists on being free. This once weak dog has shown just how determined she is to live life on her own terms. Her foster mom discovered that Sadie does not like to be cooped up. Case in point: one day, her foster mom tried using a gate to keep Sadie Mae in the laundry room while she went shopping. When she returned, she found Sadie Mae lying outside the laundry room—she’d figured out the gate! Her mom figured she didn’t have the gate secured properly and tried again the next time. Again, Sadie took the gate down. When her mom got home, Sadie looked at her as if to say, “I guess I showed you.”
Programs like this thrive because of people willing to open their hearts to senior dogs—and the donors who help make their care possible. Older dogs may not have as many years ahead, but they still have so much love, joy, and spirit to give. Sadie Mae proves it every day.
